  Grenoble Grenoble Grenoble is a capital of the Alps, and with its beautiful location, thriving universities, and prosperous industries, it has a good claim to the title. Today Grenoble makes for a lively and modern place to visit, and its setting between rivers, with mountains all around, is truly stunning during summer and winter, when skiing is the most popular regional activity. The European theater festival and the two music festivals mean Grenoble has more to it than proximity to the slopes. To get the best view of Grenoble take the cable car from quai Stéphane-Jay up to Fort de la Bastille or walk up the steep footpath from Église St-Laurent. The fort offers magnificent views of old town, the Italian St-Laurent quarter, and the mountains. The old town is centered around place Grenette and lots of narrow streets and lively squares in this area afford pleasant places to relax.
  Chamonix Chamonix Chamonix sits in the shadow of Mont Blanc and offers some of the most challenging skiing in Europe. The town is in the center of a string of villages spread out along a valley cutting deep through the Alps; the village of Argentiere is six miles up the valley, beneath the renowned Grands-Montets slopes, and Les Houches is a small resort a few miles below. The huge variety of on- and off-piste skiing in Chamonix attracts all levels of skiers, and this shows in the sportive atmosphere in the bars and restaurants. Chamonix is known for its ski-hard-party-hard atmosphere and the nightlife won't disappoint. There is a casino for those wishing to try their luck on the tables. Chamonix's other activities include swimming, bathing in Turkish baths, indoor ice skating, and bowling.
  Dijon Dijon Dijon, a city in Romantic France, has numerous sights. Tour Philippe le Bon offers outstanding views. The Palace of Dukes of Burgundy now houses the Town Hall and Fine Arts Museum. Charming squares and streets lead past half-timbered houses and elegant mansions beneath church spires. Notre-Dame, the Gothic church dating from the 13th century, is a stone work of art with a unique facade of gargoyles and slender columns topped by the Jacquemart Clock which has struck each hour for townspeople since 1383. The Cathedral of Saint-Benigne has a crypt containing fascinating sculptures from around the year 1000. Near the cathedral are old churches of Saint Philibert and Saint Jean. The Archaeological Museum houses fascinating treasures. The Perrin de Puycousin Museum of Burgundian Life reconstructs the life of past Dijonnais and Burgundians, while the Museum of Sacred Art is housed in the former chapel.
