Ubud

Hidden among the rice paddies, foothills, and steep ravines is Ubud, the cultural center of Bali renowned for its arts, dance and music. The town was an important source for medicinal herbs and plants wherein Balinese the word 'ubad' means medicine. It was a Javanese priest in the 8th century who discovered Ubud while meditating between two crossing rivers. Here, he discovered the Gunung Lebah Temple on the valley floor which today, remains a pilgrim destination. Tranquil, visitors can find serenity in nature and  inspiration in its ancient temples and palaces. Make friends at the Ubud Monkey Forest, but hold on to your belongings. Meditate at Anand Ashram or hike through the rice paddies.

Lovina Beach

Lovina is the collective name of a string of resort villages on Bali's northern coast, about 70 mi/120 km north of Denpasar. It offers decent black-sand beaches, good snorkeling offshore, and a variety of restaurants and accommodations. Lovina's noise and nightlife are concentrated in Kalibukbuk, which even at its worst is still much quieter than Kuta.

There are also plenty of nearby attractions. One popular pick is an early-morning dolphin trip. Boats gather in a flotilla offshore just before sunrise waiting for the dolphins to wake up and start leaping out of the water. Other sites include the Banjar hot springs and pretty Gitgit waterfall. The drive to the waterfall passes clove trees and some spectacular scenery and continues to lakes Buyan and Bratan.

An offshore reef keeps the waves at bay, so there's little surfing to speak of in this part of Bali.

Nusa Dua

Nusa Dua is a very popular resort town in beautiful Bali. The town is best known for its tranquil sandy beaches. Excursion companies offer watersport activities, parasailing, jetskiing, diving, and fly fishing adventures. Pantain Geger Beach boasts the warmest water temperatures and sandiest beach. From Nusa Dua you may take a glass-bottom boat to Serangan Island and learn about the islands turtle conservation efforts. Nusa Dua also offers a pristine gold course and country club.
